How do I Install
an Operating System on my machine?
Systems and Laptops/Notebooks From RDC are supplied without
an operating system. They boot to a blank formatted
hard drive. In order to install an operating system
from a CD ROM, you can use one of two methods:
Most operating system CD ROM’s, are directly
bootable (generally anything newer than Windows 98).
In order to use this feature, the BIOS of the system/notebook
must support this feature (most modern systems do).
It is possible that in order to change the Boot Up sequence
to boot from the CDROM first, you may need to enter
the BIOS (sometimes called Setup) by pressing a specific
key when the unit is first powered on (F10 on Compaq
systems, F2 on Dell systems).
If the bootable CD method fails for some reason, you
can use a boot disk with CD ROM Support, if you are
unsure as to how to make a Boot disk with CDROM Support,
you can download Boot disk images for most operating
systems. When using a Windows 95,98 or ME Boot disk
you will need to run the setup manually, i.e., for Windows
98 setup can be run by typing -D:\WIN98\SETUP.EXE (Where
D: is the Drive letter given to your CDROM).
If you are Installing Windows NT, 2000 or XP setup
should run directly from the floppy disks.

Windows says
my Hard Drive is only 2GB, but i bought a larger drive?
If you are using a copy of Windows 95 - Version A,
or Installed DOS before trying to install Windows, the
maximum partition size you can create on the Hard Drive
is 2GB, this is because DOS and Windows 95A only support
partitions using FAT16. Windows 95B and higher support
larger partitions using FAT32 or NTFS file systems).
To correct this Issue you will need to use a DOS based
tool called FDISK, using a Windows 95B, 98 or ME boot
disk, boot up with the boot disk, and Type FDISK at
the Command Prompt. When the system asks if you wish
to enable large disk support, press ‘Y’
and Enter. You will need to delete the old primary partition
first, then reboot and reload FDISK, then create a new
primary partition using all of your disk space.

My Laptop/Notebook
display has a large black boarder around the edge (or
looks blurred/uneven)?
Flat panel displays, like those on Laptops/Notebooks work on
a fixed resolution eg, a 13.3" TFT would be designed
to work at the resolution of 1024 x 768. Using a resolution
lower than this will leave a black boarder around the
screen. Some Laptops/Notebooks use software to expand the image
to the full screen, but this can look blurred or grainy.
Open the display properties by right clicking on the
desktop and choosing properties, if the drivers for
your Video Card are installed, you will be able to increase
the Resolution Slider to 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768 and
clicking OK. This will change the resolution to the
correct setting, depending on your model. This issue
is most common when the drivers for the video card are
not included with windows, if this is the case, the
display adapter will be listed as a standard VGA card,
and the display will be running at 640 x 480 with only
16 colours. You will need to install the correct drivers,
in order to remove the black outline.

My device (Sound
Card, Network Card etc.) does not work?
Not all drivers are included with the operating system.
An operating system released before a certain model
was made will probably include very few of the drivers
you will need for your devices. You will need to install
the correct drivers for any devices that do not work.

Where can I
find drivers for my Hardware?
Branded systems and Laptops/Notebooks such as Dell and Compaq
have special sections on their websites which include
drivers for all their systems For a Dell system, you
can visit: http://www.dell.co.uk/support/ simply input
the units serial number, this will take you to a page
containing all the information you need about your system.
Similarly: http://www.compaq.co.uk/support, allows you
to search by System Model.
