Earlier in 2008, RDC were given the opportunity to help set up a new PC refurbishment and distribution centre in Uganda. Although RDC had already worked alongside Microsoft in setting up facilities in Namibia and South Africa, this was intended to be the start of a completely new model. Earlier centres have all been focussed around charity donations, but this one was intended to be different.
This time around, the focus was totally centred around establishing a viable commercial business model for the sale & refurbishment of PC equipment in Uganda. Although it would also act as a “conduit” for charity donations, this time around it needed to be based on sound business practices to ensure ongoing sustainability.
Plans were soon developed using RDC’s extensive knowledge on how to handle & process PC equipment and within an incredibly short time a container load of equipment was on its way to Uganda – by sea to Mombasa and then overland to Kampala. The shipment was made up of a complete set of test equipment for use by Ugandan technicians together with everything necessary to establish a complete IT infrastructure - in effect, everything that was needed to set up a mini-version of RDC. To complete the shipment, the container included a mix of PC equipment, from system units & monitors, keyboards & mice as well as a quantity of notebooks. All for local sales & distribution.
As soon as the container arrived RDC sent an engineer, Andy Bywater-Read, set up all the test equipment and provide a week’s training for all the Ugandan staff. This was closely followed by the official opening in June and the new company – Uganda Green Computers is now up and running and open for business.
