Charity
Computer Donation of Used IT
RDC facilitates charity computer donations on behalf of
a number of clients as part of its service offering. We
have extensive experience in tailoring charity computer
donations to suit clients’ wishes. RDC’s process
demonstrably meets the UK and EU Data Protection legislative
obligations to remove data from used IT before the equipment
leaves the EU. All equipment donated by clients is screened
to ensure equipment supplied to charitable organisations
is fit for purpose.
RDC’s Charity Partners
Digital Pipeline
The Digital Pipeline is a self-sustainable, Microsoft®
sponsored initiative that aims to provide schools and
communities in developing countries around the world
with affordable access to refurbished computers donated
by UK organisations. This enables thousands of schoolchildren
and young students in these communities to access and
realise the full potential of information and communications
technology (ICT).
RDC is a key founding partner in the Digital Pipeline,
having provided consultancy services for the pilot project
in Namibia. As well as producing the initial feasibility
study, RDC provided tools, documentation, training and
assistance in setting up the National Refurbishment
Centre in Windhoek, Namibia. The refurbishment centre
technicians trained by RDC now provide ongoing support
and maintenance for refurbished PCs deployed in local
schools and communities.
Within the Programme, provision is made for end-of
life recycling, ensuring that all equipment donated
is disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.

Digital Links
RDC’s partnership with Digital Links provides
an easy, reliable and cost-effective way to donate redundant
computers for reuse in developing countries. Digital
Links work in 21 developing countries, through a network
of carefully selected distribution partners. They ensure
that the PCs are properly installed and supported with
training and educational content. Donated computers
are used in schools, hospitals and community centres’
providing vastly improved educational and economic opportunities
and access to a wealth of information. In schools each
donated computer is used by an average of 25 students
each week.
Digital Links has put systems in place in Africa to
ensure that all machines are recycled once they reach
the end of their useful life. They are taking the lead
in addressing this important issue.
To date Digital Links have distributed 30, 000 computers.
A computer in a school is used by an average of 25 school
children each week. This means that computers donated
through Digital Links have provided access to IT for
750 000 young people. Hilary Benn, The Secretary of
State for Development, recently launched their project,
Digital Ten Twenty Ten, which aims to extend the benefits
of ICT to 10 000 000 African school children by 2010

MillRace IT
RDC have partnered with Mill Race IT (MRIT), a Social
Firm operating as a project set up by Interact, a Registered
Charity. MillRace operates within RDC’s own facilities
in Essex, preparing donated equipment to the same high
standards and using the same operational procedures
as RDC. MillRace provides employment & work experience
to the disadvantaged and people recovering from mental
health problems, which is viewed as a progressive step
towards full time employment in the community. After
being processed, donated equipment is distributed to
developing communities, mainly in Africa.

Microsoft® Approved Refurbisher
RDC were one of the first organisations to join the
new Microsoft® EMEA Approved Refurbisher (MAR) Scheme,
an important step in supporting customer computer donations
The MAR programme is run by Microsoft® to help deliver
the benefits of IT to educational institutions and registered
charities on a not-for-profit basis.
