Business Associations and governments have agreed manufacturers are responsible for product recycling. However many companies are measuring and reporting product recycling rates to understand the environmental impact of the products they sell.
Understanding the recycled or reused proportion of products sold provides the data required to improve an environmental strategy.
Measuring product recycling data is difficult and requires communication with the last user of the product if possible. In most cases sales data collection is automatic and available electronically.
Calculate the formula by dividing the number of products recycled or reused by the number of products sold and multiplied by 100 for the percentage.
A 100% recycle or reuse rate for all products is desirable. Most governments have set targets for recycling with the Scottish aiming for zero waste and a target of 70% by 2025.
